Well, that's the story of my first year in London. Starting in September, I will be attending King's College to get my PGCE and will be certified to teach science and physics in the UK. Zornitsa and others have asked why I didn't do this first, why I went into economics, and then, after many an agonizing decision, left at the end of the first semester. This delayed my ability to get a real, grown-up job and drained all my savings (I have no idea how I will pay for King's College yet). The best answer I can provide is I wasn't ready at that time. I've always know that teaching is something I could do and enjoy, but when I left college, I wanted to try something different. In that, I succeeded. This has been one of the most difficult years of my life but, looking back, I'm not sure that I would change much if I was given the chance again. My brief trip through the world of economics taught me that business life was not for me. Though most of my friends already knew this, it was a lesson I had to learn for myself. Though most people would think it was a dream come true, I cannot convey in words the soul-crushing nature of having nothing productive to do for such a long stretch of time. In that respect, this journal helped me. I started it with the intent of improving the quality of my writing -- and I'm not sure if I have -- but it helped me by giving me something to focus on and a sense of purpose these last six months. Zornitsa, my closest friend here, has been instrumental in helping me keep my sanity. She has also helped me mark the changes in myself that I otherwise would not have noticed. She's also fun to live with and write about, although she still insists that I make her look bad and portray myself far too kindly. Also, I really must thank my parents for their unconditional support during my hard decisions. I love you two. Lastly, I want to thank all the readers who took the time to write to me. The interest in the journal and its popularity (Though measuring readers on the internet is a nearly impossible task, my ISP reports on average 150-250 unique visitors a day) are an enjoyable mystery to me. As soon as my affairs with enrolling in King's College are settled (there are lots of forms to send out and lots to get back) I will be traveling to the States for the remainder of the summer to be with my parents and hopefully visit some friends. So, I'll be taking a long break from the journal. But, in some form or another, I will come back to it eventually. If you want to know when I do, send me an email. Thanks for reading. -Grey |
